ok so I bought a really nice navy suit from Mexx about a month ago. Only need to get the arms hemmed a little which is amazing since I can never even find button up shirts that fits right. My only question now is what colour shoes do I wear with a navy suit? and what colour shirt underneath, white is my best guess

Shoes - Nude; When you buy your first pairs of shoes for a work wardrobe, you should first get a pair of black shoes and a pair of nude shoes. They will match anything you get from there.

Shirt - Can be anything, seriously (as long as it matches navy). Pale blue, white is fine too, you can go with a pale pink too. Just remember not to go with something that is shiny or way too bright. You can opt for brighter colors (I'm not talking about flash pink) if you are not starting from scratch. For first shirts (and interviews for that matter), I would stick with white (make sure you can't see your bra through it or wear a white cami underneath) and pale blue. Afterwards, you build from there and add more color.

Important stuff too, underwear. Make sure people can't see what type of underwear you're wearing. Thongs can be an option, but, in my opinion, are way too uncomfortable to wear everyday. There are laser cut panties (you can find them at any underwear shop) that show no seeming through clothes and they come in all types (normal panties, brazilians, boy shorts, etc.). There are also bras made of the same material/technique. And for bras, it's always a good option to have at least a nude one which shows less under your clothes.

Home on a Saturday night writing a paper (i.e. completely ignoring my paper and posting on ls.ca)...

Rebekkah, nude is definitely best with navy -- just don't go too pinky nude and try to get a more beigey nude. Also patent leather is always the nicest for a nude heel/flat. They'll work really well with black/grey clothes too. I think you'll find you'll wear your nude shoes more often then you'd expect, even though most people would think they'd wear black shoes the most. Also, if you get flats, invest in sturdier looking ones, not the round toed ballerina-esque ones. But a round toed pump is perfectly acceptable. I almost always wear flats to work, unless something makes my legs look stubby. It's just easier, and you don' t get that weird "clop clop" sound, where people can hear you coming from a mile away. And you don't get wobbly on high pile carpet.

With a navy suit, you have options with the shirt colour, but I think a really nice cream coloured shell or a cream silk blouse with navy pin stripes will look nicer than a harsh white one.

I make this very specific suggestion because I just got one -- and it's on sale at Holts! Hopefully there are still a few. (Armani reg. $600 marked down three times to $125.) It's very delicate looking but professional (pin stripes!), really comfortable under a jacket, and versatile because the stripes are so fine, you can't tell if they're blue/black. Very good ROI, and it's my new fave work blouse.

With my shells/blouses/shirts I usually stay conservative in colour but subtly play with texture (usually lighter textures, to offset the heaviness of the suits). Be careful with white-white stiff cotton dress shirts and black/navy suits. Something about it can look either tuxedo-like (with black) or flight-attendant-like (with navy). Stay with a neutral, softer colour and play with fabric textures/weight to get it just right. Or, you can always do tone-on-tone, like with a nice navy shell in a sheerer fabric. That would actually look awesome with patent nude shoes, come to think of it.... Get a matching sheath too, because you'll need a few things to wear under the suit if you want to make the most use out of it (especially if it was expensive).

Navy suits are a bit tricky, I find. I think grey is the easiest -- you can pretty much wear anything under a grey suit.

Aaaaaand I guess I should work on my paper now.

Happy Shopping!

The best advice I ever got about suit shopping was to look at what the suit is made of before buying. Wool, or a wool blend looks better, wears better, and lasts longer than some of the other blends out there. Also, spending the extra money to get it tailored right goes a long way towards looking "put together" - just make sure you bring the shoes you plan to wear with it when you go so that you don't have to guess.

I'm petite, and Jacob and RW&CO are my go-to stores for dress clothes. I always try to buy their stuff on sale though - I don't think it's worth paying full-price.

Honestly, this is a big problem. Its impossible to find anything that is good quality and is inexpensive and fits well. You'd be lucky to get two out of the three.

I would recommend staying away form Jacob, Smart Set, RW&CO. They usually looked cheap and less professional. Mango, Zara, Club Monaco and Mexx look a bit better but in my experience they are not that great of quality. I generally had good luck with Banana Republic but I do find their designs to be a bit boring.

Also, I dont mean to sound like a snob. I pay my casual clothes for affordable stores Jacob and the other I have mentioned all the time. Still, I believe that professional and work clothes should be of higher quality becuase they are meant to give the best possible impression of you.

Did anyone have any luck at Femme Carriere?
