I always under the impression that Canadian Lawyers wore a suit to court, not a robe (like the Brits).

However, yesterday my Prof gave me a headache when he said this was not so.

Please, someone tell it isn't true.

Please.

Thank you.

.....Please!

What I've seen in Quebec courts is that lawyers wear a robe AND a little white collar!!!

Was at the Vancouver courthouse a few days ago. Definitely saw lawyers in the barristers lounge with robes, sorry buddy :(.

As far as I know, in AB at least, robes are not required in provincial court (a suit is worn), and at QB or higher, robes are worn.

Lawyers in Canada wear robes in all courts except in lower provincial and territorial courts. I kind of like it - all that money you spend on a law degree gives you the right to wear fancy dress and feel more important than everyone else :p

I'm frankly a little disappointed we don't get those neat white wigs to go with the robes...

Bet I could grow a bitchin' set of muttonchops to go with one of those bad boys...

And yes, this might be the one and only time you'll see the phrase "Bitchin' set of muttonchops"

In AB, robes are required at appeals. They'll be worn in QB when it's an appeal of a Provincial Court or Admin. Tribunal decision, but in regular QB, robes are not worn.

It's neat walking through a law office and seeing robes hanging up ready to go at a moment's notice. I like it!

Not sure about you guys, but when I think of robes, I think of the dark red ones that people perform rituals in in movies, or the ones jedi warriors wear

You won't get a fancy red one unless you become a SCC justice. ;)

To the OP: I'm a little surprised that you weren't aware of the fact that Canadian lawyers wear robes in court. Don't you ever watch the news and see lawyers being interviewed outside a courthouse after a trial?

In any case, most lawyers don't wear robes because most never appear in court.

Robes means you can wear pajamas underneath which is necessary for sleeping at the office.

Where's the best place to get a M2M robe? I don't want to break the bank here but I don't want to look out of place. How many pleats are considered acceptable? Comfort is important to me. Lastly, pants or freedom?

Your firm will likely tell you all of this way before you actually need a robe?

And here I thought it was a collective sigh at the failed attempt. Silly me.

However, agree most courts do.

You can always just watch the first few seasons of the original L&O, as most of the UK episodes are literal re-treads of old scripts.

Funny to imagine everyone posting on this board wearing a robe and looking respectable. Or maybe its just me.

Darth Vader wore a robe. No one questioned his authority or respectability, either.

Hey, we Canadians shouldn't be complaining about wearing robes in court. Today I found out that in the UK, lawyers wear WIGS in court!!!!!!!!!!!!

From Wikipedia:
"In court, barristers are often visibly distinguished from solicitors by their apparel. For example, in Ireland, England and Wales, barristers usually wear a horsehair wig, stiff collar, bands and a gown. As of January 2008 Solicitor advocates will also be entitled to wear a wig, but will wear a different gown."

If I practiced law in the UK I would stay far far away from the courthouse...

Point of order, but Darth Vader's robes were more of a cloak that he wore strangley--they were sort of robe-like, but not quite somehow. Also, quite a number of people in the imperial navy questioned his authority, including most famously Admiral Motti (the whole "I find your lack of faith disturbing" thing and the force choke).

Anakin wore robes, I guess.

(for the record, I'm being pedantic on purpose here, just to play up the recent tradition here :) )

I always thought it was just a cape that Darth Vader wore. Mind you, he was bad ass enough to pull it off.

Does it matter what type of court you are in, or is it all courts?

Do Canadian lawyers ALWAYS have to wear robes in court?

...This is so upsetting. I am nowhere near as Badass as Vader!

He has a cape, yes. He also has a bunch of cloth that runs down from his back and pecktoral area and around his back, down to his calves. It's very odd: almost like a robe with the entire shoulder area cut off, and opened in the front, with his belt over top. Here's a good picture: http://www.mne.psu.edu/me345/Lectures/s ... er-art.jpg
