I was walking through the U of A law school the other day because I was on the campus and I noticed that there are many posters throughout the school. These posters are advertising month long summer courses offered by Cornell, Duke and other American schools in European cities. I was just wondering if anyone has done these and if they are worth it. When I mean worth it, would it make more sense to just travel the various cities on my own or is it worthwhile to take the course and potentially meet other students from different schools.

Cheers,

I posted a similar question a few years ago, and never got any responses. It's too bad, I'd love to hear from someone who's been through one of these... or at least be smacked down by someone who thinks it's a colossal waste of money. I'm seriously considering doing one next summer, partially because I love any excuse to spend time in europe, and it would mean taking one less course in one semester of third year. (i'm going into 2L in september)

I know several people who've done this, even some of the ones you specifically mention. It's quite expensive, but the experience is second-to-none and something to talk about come interviews. I've heard it's a great experience, worth the money especially if the credits count towards your transcript. It's not a colossal waste of time. It's a great way to spend time in a new place, meet cool people, and learn a little bit of international law.

Yeah I'd ballpark it around there. What's going to get you is actually tuition... say $4000, which is pretty reasonable for american schools, especially duke, cornell, etc.

Osgoode has a similar program which is much less costly. It's regular Canadian tuition. You might be able to attach yourself to an Osgoode program, I'm not sure, but then the cost is quite reasonable. They have a choice between Israel and Italy I think.

U of A also has ones in Australia and Spain. I'm attending U of A in the fall. But I think it would be better to go to one put on by a school your not attending because you would have an opportunity to meet more people.

It just intrigued me seeing that you could attend a course put on by Duke and Cornell.

If you're not concerned about cost, go and do one. Not only do you meet tons of people but there are sightseeing activities they plan for you as well. It's a great way to spend a summer, especially summer after 1L when almost no one has legal work experience. It guarantees you a 'legal' summer but it's still fun and you learn a lot.
