I would rather go to McGill (if they accept me) and I received some advice from some professors regarding U de M that has influenced my decision. It's not 100% for sure, but I seem to be leaning that way.

I spoke to a partner at McCarthy-Tetrault and a professor that is also a lawyer. Both spoke to me about teaching methods. U de M has more pragmatic, straight forward way of teaching. From what both of them told me, the idea is really just to train you to pass the bar and go out and get a job right away. What I understood was that it's good if you want to get right into corporate law or something like that.

Both of them also told me that McGill takes a more theoretical approach to teaching and for those people that are interested in areas of law outside of what I mentioned above, it can be better. Personally, I am really interested in constitutional law and think McGill may serve my legal interests better.

It all depends what you want to do, I think. All of that being said, it is hard to make any judgment on either school without having been there and gone through the education. I did speak to a lot of people though and they all confirmed roughly what I have said above. That's not to say there aren't exceptions.

U de M gave until April 18th to give a decision and I don't think I will have heard from McGill by then. (I really hope so, but being on the waiting list, I am told that most responses are given in the summer.) On top of that, you have to make a $200 deposit if you want to hold your spot. That's a lot of money if you plan not to go there.

I hope this answers your question adequately.

absolutely, and you are quite right about the difference between those twho. i believe (from what i was told by friends who went there) mcgill teaches a lot more like in the US law faculties (and other canadian law faculties too) : some professors use the socratic method which requires more prep and participation in class ...

Most classes in UdM are a lot more straight forward in the sense that they are lectures (i took a few law classes there). you wont get the tipical teacher who will drill a student all class long asking him question on a specific subjects that students are required to prepare in advance.

i also believe mcgill is a bit more theoretical than UdM... which should be better for constitutionnal law i guess...

hope you get accepted in McGill... good luck!

In at Sherbooke and I have stats no one would ever be proud of (see Sherbrooke thread) and yet Sherbrooke has a really good rep here in Quebec.

Of course, all my science marks were low, and all my marks in humanities, ethics, music, sociology, history, poli. sci. were stellar. So my low gpa is decieving, I'm just not cut out for science.
